In 1937, an insurance executive purchased some land in Salem, New Hampshire and named it Mystery Hill because of some unusual stone formations located upon it.  In 1982, it was renamed America’s Stonehenge.

Today, the odd site is part of a public recreational area that includes snowshoe trails and analpaca farm.

Several theories exist to explain the origin of America’s Stonehenge:

  • Local farmers built it  in the 18th and 19th centuries.
  • William Goodwin built it in the 1930s.
  • It was built during a pre-Columbian era by unidentified persons, perhaps ancient Celts.
Here’s another weird but wonderful American Stonehenge site.

Villa Epecuen, southwest of Buenos Aires Argentina, was a thriving tourist village until the mid-1980’s. It sat on the banks of a famous salt lake of the same name.

Thousands of people from around the globe flocked to Villa Epecuen because of its lake’s reported therapeutic powers. The locals believed Epecuen Lago— or “eternal spring” — could cure depression, rheumatism, skin diseases, anaemia, even treat diabetes. Local businesses thrived including hotels, hostels, shops, spas and museums.

The dream ended in 1985, when years of uncharacteristically heavy rain caused an upstream dam to begin leaking. By 1993, the villa was completely submerged under 30 feet of water, ten times saltier than any ocean.

In 2009, the seasonal rain levels returned to normal and the ruins below slowly resurfaced again.

In 1985, a fantasy world of crystals was discovered in a silver mine 1,000 feet below Mexico’s Chihuahua Desert.

The 600,000 year old cave contains 170 crystal obelisks that measure up to 37 feet. Millions of years ago, these giant obelisks formed when retreating magma caused the chamber’s calcium rich groundwater to cool.

Today, the cave reaches 112 degrees F, requiring explorers to wear protective suites and backpacks filled with ice-cooled air.

I am burned out on Stonehenge. How much play can be squeezed from a circle of old rocks sitting in a wheat field? Even the far flung theories surrounding this megalith are stale. So, the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni was a welcome addition to my offbeat archaeology reading list.

This underground freak chamber hides so many mysteries, you’d need a weekend and a good search engine to scoop it. The Hypogeum is a subterranean network of interconnected chambers (think antfarm), located on the Mediterranean island of Malta. It was built at least 6000 years ago –predating the Great Pyramids and Stonehenge by 1000 years.

A small room within this temple, known as the Oracle Chamber, is believed to be the center of worship. Its rounded walls and corbelled ceilings amplify a spoken word a hundredfold. Archaeo-acoustic investigations have demonstrated the Oracle Chamber produces vocal resonances at the exact frequencies required to activate the emotional centers within the human brain.

In other words, the high priest(s) would chant within this room and trance their followers throughout the Hypogeum. It’s no coincidence Wikipedia’s ‘Trance’ page discusses the Oracle of Delphi, because this was a popular practice throughout the ancient Greek world.

Regardless, the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni stands alone because it didn’t use geologic gas leaks or drugs to hypnotize devotees. It used acoustic engineering principals that we are only beginning to understand 6,000 years later. Conspiracy theorists cite the Ancients’ advanced acoustical knowledge as proof they had been contacted by extraterrestrial beings. How else could they know this stuff?

Some scientists explain these people of antiquity had lived in caves shortly before building the Hypogeum, so they know the art of echoes well. I don’t know if this explanation was tongue in cheek but it makes sense. At worst, it was a world class dodge.

It’s little wonder early civilizations were fixated on astronomy. Each night, after their skies faded to black, only the moon and stars offered protection from the imagined dangers lurking in the shadows.

The ancients also had a superstitious eye towards the ground underfoot, since it proved as mysterious to them as the heavens. Naturally, metaphysical concepts associated with subterranean spaces like Hades, Sheol and Hell developed within many societies. Like their celestial counterparts, the terrestrial beings of lore were usually bestowed with superhuman characteristics, whether they were ascended ancestors, gods or devils.

Here are a few examples:

· Buddhism: A race of advanced beings inhabit vast underground cities. They occasionally visit humans to aide in our development as a species.

· Hindu: A civilization of serpent people, the Nagas, dwell in the subterranean cities of Patala and Bhogavati. The Nagas abduct, torture and eat human beings.

· In Irish myth, a tunnel in northern Ireland leads to a realm inhabited by a non-human race that introduced Druids.

· In North America, the Iroquois believe their ancestors had originated from inside the earth.

· In South America, Brazilian Indians say their ancestors emerged from an underground world and many still remain.

I was surprised to learn the basic tenets of these ancient beliefs, dating back many thousands of years, had survived into the 20th century as the Hollow Earth Theory. The Hollow Earth Theory has several variations, but they all profess within our planet exists a central sun, oceans, continents and advanced civilizations.

Edmund Halley (Halley’s Comet) proposed this hollow Earth model in 1692. He derived this complex idea while trying to explain the fluctuations in the Earth’s magnetic field.

This is the most popular hollow Earth model. As depicted here, the inner world is accessible through polar holes measuring hundreds of miles across. Also, our planet’s interior has its own ocean, continents and sun.

The latest version of the hollow Earth theory was developed after technology and exploration proved giant holes in the polar regions did not exist. So, it’s the same model as Polar Holes mentioned above, but without the polar holes.

To me, it seems unlikely that millions of enlightened subterranean lizard men are basking under a sun hidden within our planet. I’ve read the evidence and I’m just not feeling it. On the other hand, just because I can’t plot Hell on my iPhone doesn’t entice me to live like it doesn’t exist.

Here’s how the story goes:

In October 2012, an unidentified source from the Egyptian Antiquities Department leaked this photo to Facebook. Accompanying the photo was this description “

“The body of a perfectly preserved, carefully mummified an alien was found buried in an ancient pyramid. A mysterious creature from between 150 and 160 centimeters was found by an archaeologist near Lahun when exploring a small pyramid near the Dynasty doceaba of Senusret II. However, this fact was not revealed immediately.”

“The mummy of what appears to be an alien, dates back more than 2,000 years and it seems it would be a humanoid” said a source at the , who provided details and photographs of the find but did so under condition anonymity.”

Inscriptions on this little guy’s tomb identified him as Osirunet, meaning sent from heaven. Apparently, he enjoyed steady employment as counselor to kings and pharaohs.

I couldn’t find any primary news sources running this story but here’s a link to a quasi-reputable news source.
