The Stone Forest of China is located in Shilin Yi, China. Many of the formations in this popular tourist attraction resemble petrified wood, hence the name Stone Forest. Actually this geographical feature was formed 270 million years ago by the dissolution of limestone.

According to folklore, a beautiful girl of the Yi people was forbidden to marry her love. Heartbroken, she turned into a rock. The story seems inadequate to explain the Stone Forest, but hey, I’m just regurgitating Wikipedia.
