Sapporo, Japan has been hosting its bigger-than-life snow festival since the early 1980’s. In February, the city’s streets are adorned with grand buildings, palaces, historical figures and cartoon characters– all sculpted from snow and ice.

Ice and snow sculptors, representing over 20 countries, compete in this annual competition. As you can tell from the below images, these fanatical artists bring their “A-game” and the spectators reap the rewards.

Lesser artists can also participate by helping to build 10,000+ snowmen, a standing world record set by the festival in previous years.
